The team was awarded cocaptain status in 2018. Rapinoe was the one who scored two goals for the United States in the 4-3 win over Australia at the Olympics bronze medal game at Tokyo in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic which Japan had to delay until 2021 because of this pandemic, also was awarded the gold medal at Tokyo in 2016.
